The 2024 Oscars: colour and proportion on the carpet

A red carpet places very different clothes within the same frame. At the 2024 Oscars, colour and proportion gave the evening’s fashion several ways to register beyond the individual close-up.

America Ferrera’s pink Atelier Versace and Ariana Grande’s expansive Giambattista Valli offered contrasting uses of the same broad colour family. Cynthia Erivo’s green Louis Vuitton introduced another relationship between material and silhouette.

Metallic surfaces supplied a separate route. Florence Pugh’s Del Core and Charlize Theron’s Dior worked with light, while black evening dresses made cut and neckline more immediately visible.

The interest of the group lies in comparison rather than a definitive ranking. Each look had to function both on a moving body and as a widely circulated still image, with colour becoming one of the quickest ways to establish a distinct presence.
