Vila Medí: three kitchens, one São Paulo dining room

A burger-and-milkshake institution gave its dessert counter a more deliberate identity when it began making gelato in 2016.

At Milk & Mellow, the addition of gelato was not a departure from the diner. It extended a familiar meal. Burgers and milkshakes had already established the São Paulo restaurant’s vocabulary; making its own frozen dessert brought another part of that vocabulary under the kitchen’s control.
WAYFARER’s September 2025 report traced the change to 2016. It described an Italian-inspired production process using fresh milk and cream, with manual filling and a selection of imported ingredients. Those details concern the house’s stated method, not a universal definition of gelato or a nutritional judgment.
The flavours in the account included vanilla, chocolate, Ovomaltine and pistachio. ChocoCherry combined Belgian dark chocolate with Italian cherries, while Amarena drew on fruit from the Bologna and Modena area.
The restaurant used gelato in cups, milkshakes and composed desserts rather than treating it as a separate business. Partner Paulo Bueno’s description in the original report placed it within the meal itself.
At the time, the archive listed addresses on Avenida Juscelino Kubitschek and Avenida Cidade Jardim. This adaptation does not present those details as an updated branch directory.
The interesting shift is one of authorship. A diner can evolve without abandoning its recognisable dishes. By producing gelato, Milk & Mellow added a new level of choice to the ingredients and combinations that followed the burger.
