The Paris retrospective of 2023–24 placed the artist's early figurative work, major murals and late paintings inside a longer career.

A Rothko retrospective has to do more than assemble the colour fields through which the artist is most readily recognised. The Fondation Louis Vuitton exhibition gave those works a longer sequence, beginning with earlier figurative paintings and moving towards the late canvases.

WAYFARER’s October 2023 account introduced the Paris show. The Fondation’s own exhibition record confirms the retrospective, organised with Suzanne Pagé and Christopher Rothko, and its body of 115 works. It ran into April 2024 and is not a current exhibition listing.

Several ways into the painting

The Seagram Murals supplied one major chapter. Initially connected with the Four Seasons restaurant commission in New York, the paintings acquired a different life after Rothko withdrew from that arrangement.

The later Black and Gray works offered another register from the brighter canvases. Their palette should not be reduced to a simple diagnostic illustration of the artist’s health or biography.

The source also traced Rothko’s migration to the United States and his formation in New York. Those details help place the paintings inside a life without explaining every surface through one event.

This adaptation does not reproduce the original article’s unverified quotations. The retrospective’s scale makes its argument more directly: a familiar visual identity can be reconsidered when the work before and after it is allowed into the same room.
