Ryokan: one hospitality language, several settings

The 2024 archive selection moved between Izu, Tokyo, Kyoto and mountain towns without reducing them to one experience.

A hospitality tradition becomes less useful when it is described as though every address offers the same stay. WAYFARER Brazil’s May 2024 ryokan selection moved across several Japanese settings, revealing differences within a shared vocabulary.

Asaba in Izu and Konanso near Lake Kawaguchi introduced relationships with landscape and water. Hoshinoya Tokyo placed the discussion inside the capital, where a traditional hospitality language occupied an urban building rather than a rural retreat.

Yoshida-Sanso in Kyoto supplied another architectural context, while Notoya at Ginzan Onsen brought the surrounding town into the picture. The source also included Ekoin at Koyasan. Temple lodging is a distinct form of accommodation and should not be treated as interchangeable with every ryokan on a list.

This adaptation is not a checked booking guide or an assertion that a traveller will live exactly as a resident does. Tatami, bathing and seasonal food can provide useful points of inquiry, but each property has its own practices and conditions. The better question is not which address is most authentic. It is how the room, meal and setting work together at the particular place under consideration.
