La Roqqa: colour above a Tuscan harbour

A renovated hotel in Porto Ercole paired a contemporary interior with views and food tied to its coastal setting.

La Roqqa’s colour gives the interior its own presence without requiring it to compete with the sea. Red, deep blue and white appeared in the communal spaces, while rooms opened towards terraces and the harbour landscape.

WAYFARER’s March 2025 account traced the Porto Ercole hotel to the Jonsson family’s interest in the Argentario area. A three-year renovation with Milan designers Palomba and Serafini reworked an existing property rather than beginning with an empty site.

The route through the building

A spiral stair connected the entrance to the mezzanine, making circulation one of the project’s more visible gestures. Large windows and sea-facing terraces gave the rooms a less enclosed register.

The rooftop supplied another scale of view. At Scirocco, chef Francesco Ferretti’s menu used regional references, with roasted octopus and spaghetti with fresh tomato among the dishes recorded in the archive.

The report also described a nearby beach-club format. Its service details and the source’s travel-time claims are not treated as a current guide.

La Roqqa’s more substantial subject is the relationship between renovation and place. The hotel used a contemporary palette and a clearly drawn interior while keeping the harbour, the coastline and local food central to the account. It did not need to turn the village into a backdrop for an unrelated design story.
