Art Basel Hong Kong: different times in the same room

A large fair does not have to present every work on the same timeline. Art Basel Hong Kong’s 2026 programme introduced Echoes, a sector built around work made within the previous five years. Recent practice became a curatorial frame rather than simply a release date.

WAYFARER Brazil’s March preview placed that initiative beside film, installation and digital work. Art Basel’s own announcement confirms both the new sector and artist Ellen Pau’s direction of the film programme. The formats supplied different conditions for looking, not just different sizes of booth.

The source’s artist selection moved between Woo Hannah’s textile forms, Chan Ting’s combination of pigment and found objects, and Miler Lagos’s use of discarded books. Those materials bring different histories into the room. A book can become a sculptural component without losing its association with reading.

The original text was a preview, not a report of attendance, and this adaptation preserves that distinction. Its broader value lies in the questions opened by the programme: how recent work is grouped, how a moving image is given time, and how everyday objects change when they enter another system of display.
