Garibaldi: Brazilian sparkling wine on its own terms

Two gold medals put a fruit-led Brazilian approach before a French jury.

Brazilian sparkling wine does not need to imitate Champagne to earn attention in France. That was the argument of WAYFARER’s July 2026 account of Garibaldi at the Citadelles du Vin.

The report recorded gold medals for Floratta Rosé and Moscatel Branco from the 2025 vintage. The competition in Bourg-sur-Gironde brought together wines from sixteen countries, giving the cooperative’s results an international setting without making France the definition of the product.

The technical distinction was the Asti method. A single fermentation in stainless-steel tanks, rather than a second fermentation in the bottle, directed attention towards the grape’s aromatic character. The article read that choice as a different ambition, not a shortened attempt at the same wine.

Moscatel Giallo supplied the white wine; Moscato de Hamburgo supplied the rosé. The report described floral and fruit notes for the former and cherry and raspberry for the latter.

The more enduring subject is positioning. A Brazilian producer entered an international competition with a recognisable identity. Recognition mattered because it did not require that identity to disappear.
