Bob Wolfenson: looking beyond the desert postcard

A proposed 2025 photographic journey approached the Atacama as a territory to understand, not simply an image to collect.

A familiar landscape asks more of a photographer, not less. The Atacama’s salt flats, coloured rock and vast horizons already belong to a widely circulated visual vocabulary. Bob Wolfenson’s proposed photographic journey set out to look beyond it.

In June 2025, WAYFARER Brazil covered the second Jornadas Fotográficas project, developed with Auroraeco and planned for November of that year. Following an earlier journey in Peru, the programme was to use Our Habitas Atacama, near San Pedro de Atacama, as its base.

The proposal combined work on images with encounters in the territory. Flamingos in salt flats and the rocks of the Rainbow Valley supplied subjects, but contact with Atacameño communities was also part of the plan. The distinction matters: a place is inhabited before it is photographed.

The source described the hotel’s Almas restaurant through seasonal regional ingredients and traditional cooking methods, extending the same attention to place beyond the camera. This adaptation records the programme as it was proposed, without claiming attendance or confirming that every planned activity occurred. Its enduring subject is Wolfenson’s approach to looking. When a landscape is already famous, the task is not to produce its next postcard. It is to find what the postcard leaves out.
