An art selection becomes more interesting when the works can be read beside one another. WAYFARER’s April 2024 preview of Blombô’s ninety-third auction placed Ismael Nery within a wider group of Brazilian modernist references.
Nery’s Figura de Mulher, dated 1929, was described as an oil painting on card measuring 38 by 46.4 centimetres. The title, medium and compact dimensions provide a concrete starting point for the work’s presence in the selection.
Candido Portinari’s Baiana, dated 1953, supplied another figurative reference. A 1958 Metaesquema by Hélio Oiticica introduced a different formal language, with gouache on card identified in the source.
The announcement also named Alfredo Volpi and Alberto da Veiga Guignard within a group of seventy works. An associated gallery presentation, De Portinari a Metaesquema: uma exposição para lembrar, offered the opportunity to encounter the selection outside the bidding moment.
