Santa Resistência: water as a way of shaping clothes

An SPFW collection translated aquatic references into movement, craft and an exchange between fluid and structured forms.

Water supplied Santa Resistência with a way to think about movement, not only a palette. Mônica Sampaio’s collection at SPFW N60 drew on aquatic female figures while asking how a garment could hold both fluidity and structure.

WAYFARER’s October 2025 account named references including Iara, Iemanjá, Aphrodite and Atargatis. Their different cultural settings were brought into the collection’s narrative, rather than presented as interchangeable beliefs.

Colour follows the current

Blues, whites, translucent greens and pinks established the principal field. Pleats, gathering and ruffles moved with the body. A more architectural blue dress, made with Sillas Filgueira, supplied a counterpoint to those softer forms.

Gefferson Villanova’s menswear used relaxed tailoring and nautical references. Tile-like patterns connected another part of the collection with the work of Adriana Varejão.

Craftswomen from the Associação Farol de Cabedelo in Paraíba contributed dresses using fishing lines and scales. The material connection to the collection’s subject was therefore literal as well as visual.

The original runway season is historical. What remains worth examining is the chain of decisions: a reference becomes a colour, then a movement, then a method of making. Santa Resistência’s account is strongest where those steps can be seen in the clothes rather than only explained in the show’s concept.
