Lilian Camelli: the rooms we carry with us
Between Paraguay and Brazil, a painter turns family photographs, empty interiors and lace into a language of memory.

Art, music and moving images offered a cultural frame for the state’s 2025 SXSW presence.

A city is more than the business case made on its behalf. At SXSW in Austin in 2025, SP House gave São Paulo’s official presence a cultural vocabulary alongside panels and professional meetings.
WAYFARER Brazil’s March account described a programme connecting technology, the creative economy and artistic production. The initiative came from the São Paulo state government, but its most revealing details were specific creative contributions rather than broad claims about economic leadership.
Carolina Afolego, an artist from Mauá, worked on the façade. A discussion of Clipe da Quebrada brought directors from peripheral urban communities into the programme, while musical performances selected by Billboard Brasil provided another route into Brazilian culture. Sampa Sky used mixed reality to introduce views of the capital.
These elements matter because an international platform can otherwise flatten a place into a slogan. A façade, a music programme and a conversation about film bring individual work back into focus. The attendance figures and future-event projections circulated in the original promotional context are not treated here as independently measured outcomes. This is a record of the 2025 presentation, not a claim about subsequent results. The cultural case for São Paulo begins with the people making its images, not only with the statistics describing its size.
