A Broadway season can be read through the stories it chooses to adapt. WAYFARER’s February 2024 preview brought together novels, musical catalogues, artist biographies and returning plays within one New York theatre itinerary.

Water for Elephants and The Outsiders supplied literary starting points. The Great Gatsby added another novel, while Lempicka turned towards the life of the Art Deco painter Tamara de Lempicka.

Music entered through several different routes. Hell’s Kitchen connected with Alicia Keys and a New York neighbourhood, The Heart of Rock and Roll drew on Huey Lewis songs, and The Who’s Tommy returned with its own established stage history.

The report also named Cabaret, Stereophonic, Mother Play, Mary Jane, Suffs and Uncle Vanya.
