LOEWE Lamps: material becomes light in Milan

At the 2024 Salone del Mobile, artists used bamboo, leather and ceramics to treat the lamp as more than a practical fitting.

A lamp needs to produce light, but that requirement leaves considerable room for interpretation. LOEWE’s presentation at the 2024 Salone del Mobile asked artists to explore that space, bringing materials associated with sculpture and craft into an everyday object.

WAYFARER’s April 2024 report described twenty-four lamps shown at Palazzo Citterio in Milan. Bamboo, leather, ceramics, glass and bronze supplied distinct ways to shape, filter or frame illumination.

A material argument

Genta Ishizuka’s suspended work took an organic form, while Magdalene Odundo’s contribution used leather. Enrico David developed a table lamp connected to his interest in the human figure. Hafu Matsumoto worked with bamboo, turning the structure of the material into a design problem of its own.

Álvaro Barrington and Zizipho Poswa brought references from personal experience and cultural ritual. Their inclusion made the collection more than an exercise in applying a house style to different surfaces.

The archive also described objects for the home made with the participating artists, including ikebana vessels and paperweights. These extended the conversation from a lamp’s function to the smaller objects that accompany daily life.

Availability and exhibition arrangements belonged to the Milan presentation and are not reproduced as current retail information. The more useful record is of an approach: beginning with the artist’s material vocabulary, then asking what happens when an object must also illuminate a room.
