Unplugged builds a stay around a small change in behaviour: the phone goes into a safe, and maps, books and board games come out. Its coastal cabins extend that proposition towards Porlock, in Somerset, where the landscape supplies a different reason to look up.

The British company began in 2020 with solar-powered cabins within reach of major cities. In WAYFARER’s August 2026 report, Barclay and Wilfred were its first coastal additions. Compact timber buildings replaced the equipment and constant connectivity of a conventional hotel with a more limited set of objects.

What remains in the room

The archive described hot showers, a wood-burning stove, Piglet in Bed linen, an instant camera and books. A Nokia phone was supplied for emergencies. Disconnecting did not mean discarding every practical support.

The two approaches to the cabins differed. Barclay involved a steep ascent and a walk towards the view. Wilfred was reached through Exmoor. Their surroundings included the pebble beaches of Porlock and Bossington, walks at Heddon’s Mouth and the Valley of Rocks, waterside pubs and tea rooms.

Locanda on the Weir appeared in the report as a restaurant working with local and foraged ingredients. It placed the stay within an existing coastal community, rather than presenting the cabin as a self-contained destination.

The archive described three-night stays. Its quoted rates are not reproduced here. The more durable detail is the arrangement of time: enough days for a small room and a familiar coastline to become something other than a backdrop between notifications.
