Bvlgari Hotel Roma: the work before the opening photograph

An Emperor’s Jewel follows the making of the Roman hotel. Its most useful subject is the relationship between a Rationalist building and the many crafts that furnish it.

A hotel opening is usually represented by a finished room. An Emperor’s Jewel: The Making of the Bvlgari Hotel Roma turns attention towards the work that preceded it: restoration, materials and the hands responsible for individual elements.

Produced by Atomic Production and directed by Andrea Rovetta, the documentary includes Priyanka Chopra Jonas. The July 2024 account looked back to the hotel’s June 2023 opening. The film belongs to that making-of story, not to a new opening announcement.

A building that supplies a framework

The hotel occupies the Rationalist building designed by Vittorio Ballio Morpurgo in the 1930s, beside Piazza Augusto Imperatore. ACPV ARCHITECTS Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel developed the architectural and interior project within that existing framework.

The relationship is important. The identity of a hotel cannot be read solely through new furniture when the building already carries a distinct urban and architectural presence. Restoration involves deciding what to retain as well as what to introduce.

The square and the nearby Mausoleum of Augustus place the address within Rome’s layered history. They are not decorative references applied to a room; they form part of the setting to which the project responds.

Read the craft at its own scale

Bvlgari’s film record describes made-to-measure textiles, Murano chandeliers, mosaics, hand-painted china and handmade tiles. Rubelli and Barovier&Toso were among the named specialist contributions to the project.

Those elements ask for a closer scale of attention than a panoramic interior photograph. A mosaic is assembled from parts. A woven textile carries decisions about texture and pattern. Glass lighting connects a room with a particular field of material knowledge.

The documentary’s subject is therefore not only the transformation of a building into a hotel. It is also the coordination of practices that work at very different speeds and sizes. A façade and a painted object cannot be made or judged in the same way.

A film commissioned by the house

The documentary is a Bvlgari making-of project. Its brand perspective should be understood as part of the form, rather than mistaken for an independent inspection of the hotel or a new stay review.

That does not remove its value as a record of production. It does require a clear distinction between what it documents and the wider claims a viewer might make about a hotel experience.

Streaming arrangements reported when the film was released should be checked in the viewer’s country. A title remaining in a project archive is not proof that it is available on the same platform in every territory.

The film’s strongest editorial contribution is a change of order. Before the opening image comes the process of making an interior, and before a general statement about craftsmanship come the individual materials and people that make the statement concrete.
