The foam on an Espresso Martini is conspicuous, but the drink’s balance begins beneath it. Vodka, coffee liqueur and espresso each contribute something different to the mixture.
Coffee gives the cocktail its aromatic centre. Liqueur adds sweetness and body, while the spirit supplies an alcoholic base that should not erase the other components.
Shaking with ice brings temperature, dilution and aeration into the same operation. A chilled glass then helps preserve the condition in which the drink is served.
Those choices matter more than treating one recipe as an automatic guarantee of a good result. Different coffees and liqueurs alter bitterness and sweetness, so the proportions need to be read in relation to the actual ingredients. The familiar three-bean garnish finishes an image whose substance has already been determined in the shaker.
