A boat’s edge does not have to remain fixed. OKEAN’s opening side decks, discussed by WAYFARER Brazil in April 2025, make the transition between interior and exterior part of the vessel’s design.

The original account placed the Brazilian builder, based in Itajaí, within a wider portrait of coastal travel from southern Brazil towards São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. That geography supplied context, but the distinctive design detail was the ability to expand the deck laterally.

On the OKEAN 52 described in the article, social areas, a kitchen and cabins were organised around circulation between enclosed and open space. Straight lines and the relationship between the lounges and deck supported the same idea: the vessel is experienced through how people move around it as much as through its outline seen from the shore.

This adaptation is not a technical sea trial or a navigation guide. It does not repeat the source’s suggested route as safe in every season, nor offer accommodation or charter arrangements. It considers the 2025 design account and one clear proposition within it. An opening deck changes the boundary between the boat and the water around it, making a familiar edge into something that can be adjusted.
