The former postal building's glass-covered courtyard became the social centre of a hotel with a preserved historic exterior.

Reusing a large public building means finding new life for more than its façade. In WAYFARER Brazil’s October 2023 account of Villa Copenhagen, the former Central Post and Telegraph building acquired a social centre inside: an expansive courtyard under glass.
The historic building dates from 1912. Its protected exterior required a careful transformation, leaving much of the design work to the rooms and shared spaces. The courtyard became a place for sitting, working and meeting, with a bar, retail elements and seating arranged to accommodate different uses.
The archive described a mix of guests and visitors rather than a lobby serving only as a route to the lifts. This distinction matters in a building originally associated with public communication. Its new use depended on keeping a sense of activity while changing what people came there to do.
The rooms followed a more contained Scandinavian design language. Special suites developed with outside designers gave some accommodation a different identity, while the rooftop pool introduced an outdoor space above the preserved street frontage.
Environmental intentions were part of the hotel’s presentation, including refillable amenities and the reuse of energy for pool heating described in the original report. They are recorded as source claims, not an independent environmental certification. Tivoli and the Glyptotek supplied nearby cultural context. The strongest architectural idea remains the courtyard: a former institutional building made hospitable by giving people a shared room with several reasons to stay.
