A fashion house’s history is also a history of how it was pictured. Chanel in Vogue, discussed by WAYFARER Brazil in March 2026, uses the magazine’s archive to consider the relationship between clothes, editorial judgement and the images that enter collective memory.

Published by Thames & Hudson and written by Rebecca C. Tuite and Susanna Brown, the project comprises two volumes. One follows Gabrielle Chanel’s presence in the magazine; the other examines the wider representation of the house. The structure distinguishes a designer’s public identity from the brand’s continuing visual life.

The account traced the relationship back to Vogue’s early coverage of Chanel and devoted substantial attention to Karl Lagerfeld’s period. Photographers, models and editors formed part of that history rather than appearing only as supporting names. Images associated with Horst P. Horst, Helmut Newton, Linda Evangelista, Inès de la Fressange and Claudia Schiffer supplied different visual registers.

Read as an editorial archive, the book shows how a magazine could help construct a house’s authority before digital platforms changed the speed and distribution of fashion imagery. A photograph was not merely documentation of a garment; its setting, casting and arrangement contributed to the meaning of the brand.

The source also noted limits in the treatment of some historical controversies. This is therefore best approached as a study of representation, not a complete biography or a neutral history of every part of Chanel’s past. Its value lies in making the construction of a fashion image available for close reading.
