A historical building is preserved most convincingly when it can continue to be used. LSO St Luke’s refurbishment addressed that practical question, connecting the former church’s character with contemporary performance and recording work.

WAYFARER Brazil’s July 2026 account described Levitt Bernstein’s intervention in the London venue. The London Symphony Orchestra’s own documentation dates the later Future Ready project to 2025, an important clarification when reading the archive’s language of recent reopening.

Recording facilities, acoustic work and improved connections between rooms were part of the transformation. Entrance, lighting and accessibility also mattered. They affected the daily experience of arriving and moving through the building, not only what could be captured inside a studio.

The useful design argument is not that new equipment makes an old structure contemporary by itself. Technology must find an intelligible place within the building’s existing proportions and uses. Here, the performance space and its support rooms were approached as a working whole. The historical shell remained present, while the activities it could support expanded. Preservation became a condition for further work rather than a reason to stop changing.
