TRAVEL
The Casino de Monte-Carlo, Café de Paris and Hôtel de Paris remain familiar starting points, but they do not explain the whole of a contemporary Monaco stay. New addresses and neighbourhoods are expanding the circuit, while the adjacent French coast supplies experiences that are closely connected to the principality without actually lying within it.
That geographical distinction is useful. A Riviera hotel may be minutes from Monaco and part of the same journey, yet Roquebrune-Cap-Martin is not another district of the sovereign state.
Mareterra changes the walk
Mareterra brings a new waterfront neighbourhood into the daily route. Renzo Piano’s architecture forms part of a wider project involving other architectural and landscape practices, with public spaces giving visitors another way to move between buildings and the sea.
The neighbourhood is not only a collection of residences. Art and hospitality addresses contribute to its public-facing life. Marlow introduces a British-inflected setting for breakfast, afternoon tea and later meals, while nearby waterside spaces extend the walking circuit beyond the older harbour views.
Movement and treatments
Larvotto gives a stay an immediate relationship with the beach. Paddle outings and other water activities depend on conditions and the operator, rather than being guaranteed elements of every day. Around Port Hercule, fitness addresses add another way to spend time away from a dining room.
At the Hôtel Métropole, the Guerlain spa connects treatment rooms with facilities such as a hammam and sauna. Surrenne on the neighbouring French Riviera belongs to a separate hotel setting outside Monaco, widening the wellbeing options without changing the map.
The Métropole at the table
Zia, associated with Manon Santini and Rocco Seminara, gives the Métropole another dining register. The programme has included shrimp carpaccio with caviar, tuna tartare, Mediterranean vegetables and pizzas finished with ingredients such as fior di latte.
The Odyssey pool setting retains its Karl Lagerfeld design connection. Dining, the water and the surrounding interiors work together, but individual menus and access arrangements remain seasonal and property-specific.
The Riviera next door
Monte-Carlo Beach lies on the French side of the border. Its long seaside-hotel history continues through beach spaces, dining and collaborations, including the Jacquemus project described in its recent programme. A temporary design collaboration should not be assumed to remain indefinitely in place.
Le Deck and Maona offer different meals within that coastal setting. La Vigie, with Simone Zanoni’s culinary direction, brings seafood and dishes such as paccheri into another relationship with the water. Nearby La Môme Riviera extends the options again, with a programme whose music and events should be checked for the chosen evening.
Larvotto and the rooftops
La Rose des Vents supplies a beach-side dining reference at Larvotto. Its design collaborations and themed settings belong to particular programmes, not a permanent guarantee of the same appearance.
Nikki Beach at the Fairmont offers a different perspective from the rooftop, where the social programme can take the day into music and gatherings. The location changes the view without moving the guest away from the principality’s central hotel circuit.
Pastry, wine and another evening
Cédric Grolet’s presence at the Hôtel de Paris introduces pastries and fruit-shaped creations into a setting usually associated first with its hotel and established dining rooms. Wine Palace near the harbour offers another way to structure a stop, while Gustave at the Hôtel Hermitage connects with the building’s architectural setting.
Amazonico brings a more animated evening into the itinerary. Blue Bay Marcel Ravin follows another direction, with the chef’s Martinican references and his use of ingredients supplying the restaurant’s own identity. They are different propositions, not merely substitutes for whichever table happens to be unavailable.
GAIA adds a Greek vocabulary: a display-led approach to fish, seafood carpaccio, accompaniments such as taramasalata and tzatziki, and dishes whose preparation keeps the principal ingredient visible. Salt-crust fish and Greek yoghurt with walnuts and honey give the meal a recognisable progression.
The useful Monaco itinerary connects these differences. A morning walk in Mareterra, a treatment, a Riviera lunch and a particular restaurant in the evening create a more detailed stay than a succession of famous names. The principality remains compact; the range of experiences around it is not.
