WATCHES
At Watches and Wonders 2026, Geneva’s watchmakers made a persuasive case for evolution rather than wholesale reinvention. Familiar collections returned with discreet revisions, while the most intriguing surprises often emerged from a change of scale, a concealed mechanism or a different way of treating light.
That restraint did not mean an absence of ambition. It placed the work in the detail, asking the wearer to look twice at a watch whose outline might initially seem familiar.
Complications that appear and disappear
Parmigiani Fleurier’s Tonda PF Chronograph Mystérieux offered one of the clearest examples. At first glance, it presented a clean, three-hand face. Activating the mechanism revealed the chronograph; returning to the time-only state allowed it to disappear again. A familiar complication became an exercise in how much information needs to remain visible when it is not being used.
Vacheron Constantin pursued refinement through thinness. Its Overseas self-winding ultra-thin combined a platinum case and salmon-toned dial with a movement only 2.4 mm thick. The watch retained the collection’s identity while giving its proportions a more concentrated form.
Smaller cases, recognisable identities
Reduced dimensions formed another clear direction. Bulgari brought the Octo Finissimo into a 37 mm case, while H. Moser & Cie. explored more compact Streamliner proportions. Neither approach required the design to surrender the architecture that made it recognisable. Smaller became another expression of the same language, not a simplified substitute for it.
The fair also left room for a more open visual structure. Jaeger-LeCoultre, TAG Heuer and Hermès developed skeletonised displays and exposed constructions, placing movement architecture in contrast with the more contained faces elsewhere in the halls.
The dial changes after dark
The A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar Lumen brought the fair’s themes together. Its translucent luminous dial joined a perpetual calendar and tourbillon to the Lange 1’s asymmetric organisation. The appearance changes with the light, revealing another register without abandoning the watch’s established layout.
CHANEL extended the J12 through contrasts of black and gold and through diamond-set versions whose surfaces approach jewellery as much as conventional watchmaking. Hublot explored the relationship between diamonds and sapphire structures, continuing its investigation of transparency as a construction material.
IWC Schaffhausen’s luminous ceramic provided another transformation between day and night. The Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Ceralume uses the case material itself as part of the light effect, moving illumination beyond the familiar hands and hour markers.
The result was not a fair governed by a single dramatic rupture. It was a collection of smaller decisions with substantial consequences: where a chronograph hides, how thin a movement becomes, how much case diameter can be removed, and what a material does when the light changes.
The strongest pieces preserved the confidence of established watchmaking while leaving something to be discovered. In 2026, refinement was not the opposite of innovation. It was one of the ways innovation became visible.
What refinement changes in use
The fair’s vocabulary becomes useful when connected with an action. A concealed chronograph changes what the wearer sees when the timer is idle. A thin movement changes the case’s proportions. A smaller diameter changes the relationship between dial, bracelet and wrist without necessarily reducing the work inside.
The luminous projects ask which part of a watch should remain visible as ambient light falls. IWC’s case material extends the illuminated surface outwards; Lange’s dial architecture reveals a complicated display. Neither can be judged completely through a daylight photograph.
A fair report is not a wearing assessment. Published specifications establish dimensions and functions, not comfort, ease of operation or appearance in every lighting condition. Those remain questions for a direct encounter. Evolution is strongest where a small design change has a clear consequence for use.
