Lilian Camelli: the rooms we carry with us
Between Paraguay and Brazil, a painter turns family photographs, empty interiors and lace into a language of memory.

The archive's 2025 account considers how a contemporary museum establishes a relationship with the pyramids.

A museum beside the pyramids cannot treat its surroundings as a neutral site. In WAYFARER Brazil’s November 2025 account of the Grand Egyptian Museum, the central architectural question was how to make a new institution face an ancient landscape without merely copying its most recognisable forms.
The design by Heneghan Peng Architects, developed after an international competition, uses the view towards the pyramids as an organising relationship. Radial lines and the arrangement of volumes connect the building to that horizon. The result described in the archive is an architecture conscious of what lies beyond its own walls.
Inside, a monumental stair gives movement through the museum a ceremonial scale. Sculpture, galleries and views work together to connect the collection with the larger setting. The original report placed the objects associated with Tutankhamun at the centre of the museum’s cultural ambitions, while also emphasising that exhibition is only one part of its work.
Conservation facilities and landscape design broadened that account. Gardens developed with West 8 brought another layer to the complex, while laboratories represented the less visible work required to study and preserve fragile materials.
This is a reading of the project at its 2025 inauguration period, not a current visitor guide. Its lasting interest lies in a precise architectural problem: how to build at monumental scale when the existing landscape already contains monuments whose meaning cannot be reproduced by size alone.
