MAM São Paulo: returning to the park

The museum's September 2026 reopening connected an exhibition with a revised route through the building.

A museum’s return is also a change in the way people move through it. MAM São Paulo reopened its Ibirapuera home in September 2026 after the restoration work around the park’s marquise.

Metrópole_arq, led by Anna Helena Villela and Silvio Oksman, reorganised elements of the interior, while Estúdio CLDT developed the signage. Levels, exhibition infrastructure and the placement of services became part of a more continuous route.

The thirty-ninth Panorama da Arte Brasileira, curated by Diane Lima, supplied the reopening’s artistic programme. The different rooms gave the works several conditions of encounter within the same museum.

The building’s relationship with Niemeyer’s marquise remained fundamental. A revised interior did not need to make the museum unrecognisable. It could instead allow the public to find another way through a familiar structure and return it to the daily life of the park.
