La Pérouse, Nice: a Riviera hotel in clay, rope and rattan

A 2023 renovation recast the hillside property through Mediterranean textures rather than a generic coastal palette.

The Riviera is easy to reduce to a view. La Pérouse, on Nice’s Colline du Château, offered another way of reading it in WAYFARER Brazil’s July 2024 account: through materials close enough to touch. Clay, rope, wood and rattan helped translate the coast into an interior vocabulary.

The hotel, founded in 1936, had undergone a renovation by Friedmann & Versace in 2023. The archive described 53 rooms with mosaic details, rattan headboards, shell-shaped handles, ceramics and Italian marble. These elements did not depend on a single blue-and-white shorthand; they gave the spaces a more varied Mediterranean texture.

Views across the bay remained important. The hillside position supplied a setting for a pool and rooftop terrace, allowing the building’s relationship with Nice to be experienced at different levels. Indoors and outdoors, the project worked with the distinction between a small-scale room and a much larger coastal panorama.

At Le Patio, lemon trees and jasmine framed the dining space. The 2024 report named Damien Andrews as chef and described dishes including sea bream carpaccio with raspberries and ginger oil. It is a record of that kitchen at that moment, not a promise about the current menu.

La Pérouse’s interest lies in this combination of landscape and close detail. The bay provides an immediate attraction, but the renovation gives the hotel a character that can be read after turning away from the window: woven surfaces, ceramic objects and a considered use of stone.
